House painting in Crossville

Crossville is the county seat and the centre of where we work. The houses here run from older homes near downtown to subdivisions built in the last twenty years, and each wants a different approach to the paint.

Painting on the plateau

Crossville sits on the Cumberland Plateau at roughly 1,900 feet, which puts it several hundred feet above the towns in the valleys either side. That elevation brings cooler nights, more rain and a longer freeze-thaw season than most of Tennessee gets, and exterior paint here has a harder life because of it.

The practical consequence is that the season for painting outside is shorter and the prep matters more. A house on the plateau that was painted over loose material peels within a couple of winters; one that was scraped, primed and caulked properly does not.

Crab Orchard stone and everything since

The local sandstone, quarried around Crab Orchard just east of town, shows up on foundations, chimneys, porches and whole elevations of older Crossville houses. Stone is not painted, but the wood trim, soffits and porch ceilings around it are, and the joint where painted wood meets stone is where water gets in if the caulk has failed.

Newer subdivisions off Genesis Road and out toward Lake Tansi are mostly vinyl, fiber cement and brick, where the exterior work is trim, doors, shutters and porches rather than whole walls. Inside, the newer houses have larger open rooms with high ceilings, which is where the cut line along the ceiling has nowhere to hide.

Questions from Crossville homeowners

Do you cover Lake Tansi and Lantana as part of Crossville?

Yes. Both are inside Cumberland County and inside the area we serve. Lake Tansi has a lot of homes built from the 1970s onward, many with wood siding and decks that face the water, and they need the exterior prep described on the exterior painting page.

My house has stone on the front. Do you paint that?

No, and you would not want it painted. Crab Orchard stone is the reason those houses look the way they do. We paint the wood trim, fascia, soffits and porch ceilings around it, and we caulk the joint where wood meets stone so water stays out of the wall.

How far out of Crossville do you go?

Anywhere in Cumberland County, and the areas surrounding it. If you are near the county line or just over it, call and describe where you are. The answer is usually yes.
